“Whatever the deliberations of the Council, they must put the needs of the residents first. It is essential that the residents stay within their community, anything else would be to the detriment of the residents. 90% of care home residents are funded by Local Authorities, and by adding the profit element and running costs onto that it’s difficult to see how the Council can make any real savings from transferring these homes to the private sector. The fashion today is to develop independent living units, but the biggest challenge facing our elderly population is loneliness, therefore care homes provide an important service for a large part of our society. Residents,family and friends must be fully consulted and in broad agreement before they make any decisions”
