Support for Cefn Mawr Marina sought from Government Minister 08.03.11

Mabon ap Gwynfor, Plaid Cymru candidate for Clwyd South, has sought the support of heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones for the proposed Plas Kynaston Marina development at Cefn Mawr.

Mabon ap Gwynfor arranged for Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones to visit the site, and discussed the exciting proposals to re-instate the Canal and develop a 60 birth Marina.

The Plaid candidate says that such a project would be a great boost for the local economy and celebrate the area’s industrial heritage.

He also encouraged the Minister to look at supporting the development of an interpratation centre and car park close to the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct.

Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones, AM, has discussed the proposals with Wrexham County Borough Council and Denbighshire County Council and encouraged all the partners to cooprate on a master plan for the marina and the whole length of the canal.

Mabon ap Gwynfor said: “I was attending a Cefn Druids cup game and  was asked to sign the petition to support the proposal to reinstate the Plas Kynaston Canal with a Marina at Cefn Mawr. After an informative discussion with one of the campaigners I set about to organise a meeting with heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones on site. The Plas Kynaston Marina proposals are exciting and would be a great boost for the area.

“Cefn has suffered greatly since the loss of Flexsys. The Marina proposal would bring a much needed boost to the area economically, but would also celebrate the industrial heritage. The area has after all been key to the development of Wales.”

Mabon added that such a development would be more successful as part of a wider tourism programme celebrating all that the area has to offer.

“This is the gateway to Wales. We need to show off the treasures that we have here, from Pontcysyllte Aquaduct, Erddig, Valle Crucis, Chirk Castle and encourage greater community engagement in the local heritage. It is a region of Wales that has been ignored far too often, and its contribution to the development of our nation has gone urecognised. Plaid Cymru would like to celebrate the role that this region has played in creating a modern and vibrant Wales. That is why I am urging people to support the Marina proposal at Cefn Mawr.

“Plaid Cymru has a vision which celebrates this region’s heritage, and we have already started to increase Government investment into the region with funding assistance for the Llangollen Railway to Corwen, the Llangollen Eisteddfod, and the Owain Glyndwr Motte and Bailey at Llidiart-y-Parc.”
