For too long Governments at every level has bowed down to economic demands at the expense of community cohesion and our children’s future. Professor Schumacher said in his book Small is Beautiful that the economy exists to serve us and not the other way around. That is perfectly true. Economic activity should put the benefit of the whole community at it’s heart, and not the benefit of individuals. If we developed economic policies to ensure that everyone had an equal share and that society as a whole benefited in equal measure, then we would live in a far better society. To this end I am a great supporter of the cooperative movement and believe that the sooner we allow the workers to have a greater say in the running of businesses, and the sooner that society gets involved in the managing of companies that profit from society’s resources the better.
