Glyn Ceiriog not appropriate for young people’s residential care home

Plas CeiriogA residential home for young adults should not be developed at Glyn Ceiriog because there is no demand for the services and Wrexham County Borough Council is already well served by several other Residential Care Homes for young people. That was the view expressed by Plaid Cymru candidate for Clwyd South, Mabon ap Gwynfor, in a packed public meeting held at Canolfan Ceiriog, Glyn Ceiriog tonight (Thursday 5th November).

Full Circle Care, of Denton, Manchester, has put in an application to convert Plas Ceiriog in Glyn Ceiriog to be a Residential Home for Young People. A public meeting was held at Canolfan Ceiriog to discuss the issue, and an invitation was sent to Full Circle Care to attend and give a presentation. Canolfan Ceiriog was full, with approximately 120 people attending.

Mabon ap Gwynfor, Plaid Cymru Parliamentary Candidate for Clwyd South, addressed the meeting saying: “We need to recognise first of all the Full Circle Care is a very good service provider, as recognised by several inspection bodies. They care for and assist vulnerable and sometimes damaged young people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in a situation where they require help in order for them to play a full part in society. It is incumbent on any civilised society to help these young people.

“There is a push within this sector to repatriate young people back to their communities. Outcomes for them are far better if they are closer to their homes. In that respect, Wrexham and the south of Denbighshire is already well served with residential homes for young people. There are currently 55 children and young people from north Wales in residential care, and the capacity of the region is 130. There is more capacity than demand locally. Nevertheless there does seem to be a demand for this service in north west Wales, and in south east Wales. If young people are to be repatriated closer to their homes, then I would kindly suggest that Glyn Ceiriog is not the appropriate setting for this residential home, and that they should look at other regions where there is a demand to conduct their excellent work in order for those that they look after get the best possible outcomes”.
