Mabon ap Gwynfor, Plaid Cymru Assembly Candidate in Clwyd South, said that people in this area were already suffering disproportionately and that the Government’s plans to cut Welfare funding for jobseekers and slash public funding would make the situation unbearable for many in the region.
“This area has suffered massive job losses recently, and successive Westminster Governments have failed to support our indigenous industries. The public sector is a major employer – the second largest employment sector behind manufacturing in Clwyd South, therefore the plans to slash public expenditure will only serve to exacerbate what is already a bad situation.
“These aren’t ‘feckless workshy scroungers’ as the Tories and Lib Dems would have us believe, but honest people who have found themselves in an unenvious situation and are trying their hardest to make two ends meet. The unfortunate fact is that there will be many more joining them in the not too distant future. The Government cannot cut essential allowances to these people who have found themselves in a desperate situation through no fault of their own.”
Mabon ap Gwynfor said that instead of cutting public funding the Government should instead target funding better and use it as an investment. “Statistically unemployment is relatively low in Clwyd South, but what these figures show is that the area is not attracting new investment, and is not creating jobs. If public funds were targetted better and used to help develop private enterprise more effectively then public expenditure would be seen as an investment in our communities.
“Instead of targetting ordinary people like us George Osborne should look to collect tax from those that avoid paying it. He’s unlikely to do that seeing as he himself has avoided paying £1.6m in tax. So in order for him and his like to continue living the high life it is us who have to pay for it. The people of Wales didn’t create this mess, and the people of Wales certainly shouldn’t have to pay for it. It’s time for a change.”
